Rising sign calculator
The rising sign (Ascendant/ASC) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. Because the sky turns one degree roughly every four minutes, the rising sign changes on average every two hours during the day - which makes birth time far more decisive for the rising sign than it is for the Sun sign.

If you're not sure of the time
Birth times on official records are often rounded. The calculator also produces a full rising-sign table for the entire birth day: if the time you enter is close to a sign boundary, it tells you exactly how many minutes' difference would change your rising sign.
If you don't know the time at all, leave the time field blank. The table shows which sign was rising, and during which hours, at your birth place that day. This isn't a guess, it's a calculation; only your actual birth time determines which row of the table is yours.
Why doesn't every sign take the same time to rise?
Because the path the Sun and planets follow across the sky (the ecliptic) is tilted relative to the equator, some signs rise almost vertically from the horizon while others rise at a shallow angle. At Turkey's latitude, Pisces and Aries take a little over an hour to rise, while Virgo and Libra can take close to two and a half hours. This difference grows further north; inside the polar circle the very definition of a rising sign breaks down, so it isn't calculated there.
What does the rising sign describe?
In astrological tradition, the rising sign marks the start of the chart's first house and is associated with how a person approaches the outer world, first impressions, and body language. Because the houses are counted starting from the rising sign, if the rising sign changes, every house placement in the chart shifts with it.
This is an interpretive framework; astrology is not a scientifically validated measure of personality.
How is it calculated?
- The latitude and longitude of the birth place are found by looking up its name.
- Local time is converted to universal time according to the time zone in effect on that date (including daylight saving).
- The rising sign is calculated with Swiss Ephemeris; the same inputs always produce the same result.
- Sign boundaries are rounded to the minute: the last minute of each table row still belongs to that sign.
